THE CHALLENGE

Site access was challenging for this project. The contractor was unable to access the site due to a pumping subgrade. The rainy season of the Pacific Northwest further deteriorated the subgrade causing construction delays.

THE DESIGN

TenCate Mirafi® RS380i woven geosynthetic was recommended to stabilize the subgrade. TenCate MiraSpec Design Solutions Software was used to calculate the design aggregate thickness of 10” to be placed over Mirafi® RS380i.

THE CONSTRUCTION

Rolling out Mirafi® RS380i with a thin initial lift of aggregate immediately allowed vehicular traffic to access the site. The full compacted lift of 10” was installed, therefore completing the road. The contractor was able to bring in larger sized aggregate at a lower cost due to Mirafi® RS380i’s ability to engage its strength with the aggregate through friction, or coefficient of interaction.

THE PERFORMANCE

Mirafi® RS380i provided site access and the ability to use larger sized aggregate, a lower cost rock source, and allowed the contractor to build the road during the rainy season and keep the project on track.
